A dialogue between matter and gaze: Clara Yasmine Serra’s selection for Paolo Fusi
Topic
In my artistic path, meeting a curator able to read and convey the complexity of my works is always a chance to grow. Today I want to share the work done with Clara Yasmine Serra, who told the story of my sculptures and installations through a considered selection and a critical text that feels close to my own sensibility.
Four categories, one vision
Clara Yasmine Serra chose to divide my work into four broad categories:
- Fragility of the self
- Playful irony
- Roots
- Sacredness
This classification comes from the need to find a way through the “enormous body of work produced”, as she writes, and to offer a view that is not exhaustive but representative of my research.
Fragility of the self
“The human being is a fragile creature… stripping away the endless superstructures that society imposes on us, what remains is an animal made of bone and flesh.” In this section, Serra captures the tension between weakness and resistance, pain and struggle. Works such as Stabilmente instabile, Anime and Sfregiata sit alongside others such as Gli spari sopra and Evasivo, conveying the ambivalence of the human condition.
Playful irony
“Art teaches us never to take ourselves too seriously…” Here there is room for play, satire and transformation: from Arlecchino e Ar lecchino to Emoticon 2020, by way of the welding masks and the wordplay of titles such as Contessa contesa. An irony that is never superficial, but always tied to a critical observation of reality.
Roots
“The call of one’s roots is visceral for human beings…” Serra highlights my bond with Florence and Tuscany, through works that pay tribute to monuments and landscapes, from Santa Maria Novella to the Duomo and Mars from Florence. The past intertwines with a personal, contemporary vision.
Sacredness
“Since ancient times, humankind has felt the need to turn towards an elsewhere…” In this section, the sacred and the profane merge: votive icons, human and animal deities, matter and light. Works such as Con Marte, Infinitamente, Dea and Materia e luce invite reflection on spirituality and its ambiguities.
A critical and human view
Clara Yasmine Serra’s text does not simply describe the works; it captures their inner tensions, their ambivalence, their relationship with time and society. Her careful reading gives depth to my path and offers the public a new key to understanding it.
